One of the children's favourite songs to sing in the toddler room is 5 little ducks. This week in the toddler room we decided to focus and build on this to incorporate other areas of development. The children already love learning new language and mathematical words through counting and repetition of the song so we extended this by creating our own little duck pond. We used a large tuft tray that we added mirror into and the children were able to create their own duck pond by using jugs and scoops to pour water into the tray. The children all loved the the reflections the water and mirror made together. They then added some logs, lily pads and ducks to their tray. The children were free to make their own choices throughout and extend on their play with their own objects and resources. The children then created their own versions of the song through role play, lining up our ducks and helping them swim in our pond. This was a lovely way for the children to work together and build on their own ideas. To further extend and build on this interest we became creative. We made our very own duck footprints. We recycled some carboard that we attached to our feet and dipped them into paint then we waddled along some paper on the floor like the little ducks. We then tried using our hands to create the same prints and patterns. We enjoyed this activity so much that we made footprints in the paint on our own. Well done toddlers what a lovely week of building on our interests and skills.
