Fruit Boats

Fruit Boats

This week in the toddler room we continued our transport topic by exploring boats and transport of the sea. The children have enjoyed exploring boats in various texture trays and to extend their play we made our own fruit boats. We used some of the children’s favourite fruits to make our boats. We used bananas for the boat and grapes and strawberries for the flag. To begin we had a group discussion and risked assessed the activity. We talked about being careful using knifes and how they should only be used for cutting at the table. Children used words like “sharp”, “hurt” and “no running” when discussing the knives. The children enjoyed using their fine motor skills to cut up their fruits making their own choices on the size and shape of their boats. They either did this on their own or with some help of an adult. The children then explored their shapes that they cut and positioned them together to create their boats. This helped them use mathematical thinking while also getting a tasty treat. Great job toddlers your boats looked amazing!
