Building a Bird House

The Ponies room took part in a risky play activity to build a bird house. They started by taking part in a risk assessment. Talking about the risks of using real tools and discussing how they would manage the risk. Ideas included sitting down on a chair, not running, and using the tools with a teacher were added to the risk assessment. The children were highly engaged when they sat down at the activity, excited to be trusted with an 'adult' tool.

The children followed simple instructions to place the bird house together. Once the shape was formed the children hammered in screws to keep it together. Managing their hand eye co-ordination to use the hammer and hold the screw. Ensuring they hit the screw when hammering.

Once the bird house was build the children filled it with bird seeds and hung it in the garden.
