Watermelon Risky Play

The Grasshoppers have been exploring risky play. They looked at the materials they would use including hammers, plyers, pins and golf tees and worked with Courtney to create their own risk assessment to manage the risk. Children looked at ways they could explore safely such as sitting with a teacher and also being very careful.

The children used hand eye co-ordination to manipulate real tools to add pins and golf tees to the watermelon. Carefully hammering them in to create their desired effect. Holding the pins supported children's fine motor skills to excel their early writing skills.

Using the real tools allows children to feel a sense of pride at feeling trusted with the 'adult resource' and children show deep rooted engagement.
