On Monday, the entire nursery came together to celebrate the anniversary of the historic moon landing with space-themed activities tailored to each age group.
In the baby room, our youngest learners explored a sensory-rich experience by creating beautiful space-themed sensory bottles. Using recycled water bottles, the babies carefully selected their own colours of glitter and star-shaped confetti to add. Once filled, the bottles were topped with water and dark-coloured paint to give a “space” effect. The babies were mesmerised as they shook their bottles and watched the sparkles swirl and float, encouraging visual tracking, focus, and early cause-and-effect understanding.
The toddlers engaged in messy, hands-on sensory play as they made moon rocks and moon dust. Using a variety of malleable materials, the children explored texture, shape, and form. This activity supported their sensory development while encouraging creativity and imaginative thinking.
In preschool, the children had a blast making their own moon rocks using bicarbonate of soda, water, and paint. They mixed and moulded the ingredients by hand, enjoying the wonderfully messy, tactile experience. Once shaped, the rocks were placed in the freezer to harden. Later, the children participated in a fizzy science experiment by adding vinegar to the rocks, watching in amazement as they bubbled and fizzed like magic!
Alongside all the fun, we had meaningful conversations about the moon, gravity (or the lack of it in space!), and why astronauts need helmets. The children showed curiosity and enthusiasm as they asked questions and shared their own ideas.
This celebration brought science, sensory play, and imagination together in a truly exciting way — a day full of discovery that was enjoyed by all!
