Hammers and Nails

During a sunny afternoon, the children engaged in some fun risky play in the garden. As a group, the children were given plastic nails, hammers and cardboard boxes as their tools and equipment to carry out the task. At first we demonstrated to the children how to place the nail in the cardboard box and then hammer it down, making sure the point of the nail was positioned downwards whilst reassuring the children that the point can be a bit sharp and how to handle it the right way.

As the children were carrying out this activity, we realised a few of them needed help with pushing the nails into the boxes because the texture may have been a bit thick for them so we encouraged their physical development and use of their fingers, by helping them grip the different size nails with a pinching gesture and assuring them to press down had with it so it will pop through the cardboard. After they really enjoyed using the hammers, being able to hold the hammer with a full palm and hitting it on the head of the nails.

They played so well together and really done a good job at using up the different spaces and angles of the small boxes and big box, and portrayed great focus too. As the children were getting through them, they wanted to do more and more. Great job toddlers!
