Heuristic Play (1)

Heuristic Play

This week the babies enjoyed a heuristic play session using everyday objects such as sponges, brushes, bangles, a mug tree and chiffon scarves. They were encouraged to explore the items freely, following their own curiosity and ideas.
Heuristic play supports many areas of development. Handling and manipulating the objects strengthens fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination. Exploring different textures, shapes and weights helps babies develop early problem-solving skills and understand concepts such as cause and effect.

Because there is no right or wrong way to use the items, babies are able to concentrate for longer and make their own choices, building independence and confidence. As adults model descriptive language, it also supports early communication skills.

It was lovely to see the babies so engaged, curious and confident in their learning.
