Recycling Bookmarks Project

This week Preschool got more of an insight about the importance of recycling materials like card, paper, cardboard and more. We looked at many ways on how and why we could and sometimes should re-use things, and how it’s a brilliant way to reduce waste.
Earlier in the week, the children received a generous amount of old story books as a donation from their nursery neighbour, as they were being given way.

The children saw this not only as an act of kindness but a way of recycling too, because instead of the books being thrown away it was passed onto the children. Furthermore, we decided to use this opportunity to create bookmarks for the children to use with their own books and story times.

The children had many options of storybooks to search through and pick out the one they would like to use to create their bookmark. In groups, the children gathered some materials and equipment needed to complete this fun activity like, scissors, a choice of book, ribbon and glue sticks. They began cutting out some pictures out from their chosen story and glued it down onto their book mark, and was able to use the hole puncher with an adult to create the hole for the ribbon to go through, as an accessory. This also implemented a little risky play because the children one by one got a chance to use the guillotine cutter, for the card paper which would’ve formed a rectangle shape for the book mark, whilst being cautious about sharp edges.
