Shape Floor Game

Shape Floor Game

This week the preschoolers engaged in a fun numeracy activity, that involved many colours, shapes and jumping. To begin the preparation, we cut out 4 different shapes that represented a different colour from each other, then placed and positioned them on the floor. The children were all given a random shape to hold too, so they knew which shape to look out for when it was their turn.

The teacher first explained and demonstrated the task of the game and the instructions to follow, which was that according to the specific shape they held, starting at the bottom, they would have to make their way to the top by jumping on the shapes they have. For example, if someone was holding a square they can only jump on the square in each of the 4 rows. When they reached the top they would place their shape onto where it belongs.

This group activity encouraged the children to recognise shapes and colours and the opportunity to identify what shapes they knew and which they may not know. This promoted team work, because as they took turns, the ones watching alongside would help shout out the next step for them to take, cheering them on and help guide them in the game.
This was really exciting for them to take part in and enjoyed it very much!
