Spring Onion Pancakes
On Monday, we were delighted to make spring onion pancakes! A child brought in fresh spring onions they’d grown at home, and we decided to turn them into a tasty savoury snack—inviting everyone to explore new flavours.
We began by making fresh dough from scratch. The children had great fun mixing together the flour, water and a little oil, then using child-sized bowls and utensils. It was a wonderful sensory and collaborative activity.
Next, we practised our measuring skills. Using digital scales, we weighed out each ingredient while following the recipe on the iPad. We discussed units—grams and millilitres—and watched the numbers on the scales climb until they matched the amounts on the recipe.
Once the dough was made, we used child-safe cutters to slice the spring onions. The children sprinkled them onto the dough, folded it over to enclose the onions, and then rolled it out one final time.
The pancakes were cooked on the hot plate for about three minutes each, until golden and delicious. The children were very proud—and they enjoyed their creations alongside pasta for lunch.
A big thank-you to the family who shared their home‑grown spring onions—this thoughtful contribution made our cooking session extra special!
