Chalk Smash!

The butterflies had lots of fun in the sun with some risky play! The children carefully used the hammer to crush their chalk pieces to create marks on the black material sheet. The practitioners spoke to the children first about being very careful with the hammers and not running near the activity. The children excitedly took the hammers with practitioners support and showed enjoyment at being trusted to use the adult resource. The children manipulated the hammers in a palmer grasp using both one and two hands to move the hammer up and down to crush the chalk. Hand eye co-ordination was explored as some children held the chalk in place with one hand and used the hammer in the other to smash the chalk. The children demonstrated lovely turn taking with their peers during this activity. After breaking the chalk, the butterflies enjoyed making more marks with their hands/feet and also enjoyed shaking the material to see the colour all their chalk made. Well done Butterflies!
