Gruffalo Crumble

For Fairy Tale Day, the Grasshoppers had a wonderful time cooking a special treat inspired by our favourite story, The Gruffalo. We began by sharing the story together, helping the children to become familiar with the characters and key features of the Gruffalo. After lots of discussion about his appearance, they set about creating our very own “Gruffalo Crumble”!
Each ingredient represented a different part of the Gruffalo: Green apples were his poisonous wart on the end of his nose. Blueberries were his black tongue. Raspberries were his orange eyes. Blackberries were his purple prickles all over his back. The golden-brown crumble topping was his thick brown fur. The children all took on important roles in the cooking process. They carefully used child-safe knives to slice the apples, showing great focus and developing their fine motor skills. Then they added the berries to the apples. Next, they worked together to make the crumble topping by mixing butter, flour, oats and cinnamon until it formed a crumbly texture. The children then helped to sprinkle the crumble mixture over the fruit before adding a few extra berries on top for decoration.
