This week, the Stars and Blaze children enjoyed exploring some of our new technology resources. Introducing technology in early years is an important part of supporting children’s learning, and we focus on using it in a safe, age-appropriate, and meaningful way.
The children were especially excited to use our VTech children’s cameras. These cameras are designed specifically for young children, making them durable, easy to use, and perfect for little hands. The children loved taking photos of their friends, favourite toys, and familiar adults around the setting, which encouraged confidence, curiosity, and lots of smiles!
During this activity, we supported important social learning by talking about sharing and turn-taking. We also discussed how not everyone likes having their photo taken and why it’s important to ask permission and respect others’ choices. This helped the children begin to understand consent and kindness in a simple, age-appropriate way.
We have also recently purchased a Toniebox, a screen-free audio system that allows children to listen to stories, songs, and educational content independently, however this will always be supported by a team member at preschool. By placing a Tonie character on top of the box, children can choose what they would like to listen to, supporting listening skills, imagination, and independence. The Toniebox has already become a calming and engaging resource within our environment.
Alongside this, the children explored our light-up drawing pads, which promote creativity and early mark-making. These pads encourage children to experiment with shapes, patterns, and drawing while developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination in a fun and engaging way.
Through these experiences, we aim to support children to:
Develop an early understanding of technology and how to use it safely
Build communication and listening skills through shared discussions and storytelling
Learn about respect, consent, sharing, and turn-taking
Express creativity and imagination through photography, drawing, and audio stories
Strengthen fine motor skills and coordination
Grow confidence and independence when using age-appropriate resources
By providing a balance of hands-on technology and creative play, we are supporting children to become curious, respectful, and confident learners while preparing them for a digital world in a thoughtful and developmentally appropriate way.
