Today we explored the letter S through three engaging, hands-on stations to support early writing development.
🚗 At our first station, the children drove the cars along the ‘S’ road, carefully following the correct letter formation. This activity supports Physical Development (fine and gross motor control) as children use controlled arm and shoulder movements, while also developing Literacy skills through recognising and forming letters. As they listened to instructions and discussed the letter sound, they were also building skills within Communication and Language.
🥣 Next, the children practised writing ‘S’ in the oats tray. This sensory experience strengthens Physical Developmentby refining fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Exploring letter formation in a tactile way supports Literacy, helping children to embed the movement pattern through multi-sensory learning. It also encourages curiosity and exploration, linking to Expressive Arts and Design.
✏️ Finally, the children applied their learning by independently writing ‘S’ on paper. This supports Literacy (early writing and correct letter formation) and further develops Physical Development through pencil control and grip. Children showed great perseverance and confidence, demonstrating characteristics of effective learning as they kept trying and took pride in their work.
We are so proud of the focus and effort shown today as the children strengthened their early writing skills in a fun and meaningful way! 🌟
