What an exciting and colourful time we have had celebrating Black History Month! The children have been on a wonderful journey of discovery, exploring different cultures, traditions, music, stories and the amazing achievements of inspirational Black individuals. Through fun, hands on activities and creative experiences, the children have been learning, asking questions and celebrating the beauty of diversity.
The children explored different types of music, listened to stories and learned about hair braiding. They also enjoyed a shopping trip to buy plantain, green bananas and okra, giving the children an opportunity to explore different foods and learn about African and Caribbean cultures.
We discovered Garrett Morgan, an inventor who patented an important three-position traffic signal. Inspired by his invention, the children created their own traffic lights using arts and crafts materials.
We also explored the artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat, known for his expressive, graffiti-inspired style. The children created their own colourful graffiti pictures, experimenting with different colours, shapes and patterns.
Inspired by Alma Thomas, for her vibrant abstract paintings, the children created beautiful mosaic-style artwork using a variety of colours and shapes.
Finally, we learned about Dr Mae Jemison, the first woman to travel into space. Inspired by her incredible achievement, the children designed and created their own rockets, exploring their creativity and imagination.
It has been a wonderful month filled with learning, discovery and creativity. We are so proud of the children's enthusiasm and participation as they celebrated diversity, explored different cultures and discovered how people from different backgrounds have made a positive impact on the world!
