Fine Motor Skills Focus 🤏

This week in preschool, we have been focusing on developing the children’s fine motor skills through a range of hands-on, sensory activities. Fine motor development is important for strengthening the small muscles in the hands and fingers, supporting children with future skills such as mark-making, writing, using cutlery, dressing and manipulating tools.
The children explored colanders and pipe cleaners, using their hand and finger muscles to carefully thread the pipe cleaners through the small holes. This encouraged the children to develop their pincer grip, hand-eye coordination, concentration and precision as they worked out how to push and pull the pipe cleaners through the different holes. The activity also provided opportunities for problem solving as the children experimented with different ways of threading and manipulating the materials.
We also explored sensory Play-Doh with coffee, cotton buds and small pots. The children used cotton buds to pick up and sprinkle the coffee onto their Play-Doh creations, imagining that they were decorating pretend birthday cakes and candles. This encouraged controlled movements and precision while strengthening the muscles in their fingers and hands. The sensory element also supported the children’s curiosity and engagement, while the imaginative birthday play encouraged language, communication and social interaction.
Both activities provided fun and engaging opportunities for the children to strengthen their hand muscles, develop coordination and practise controlled movements, all while learning through play.
