Building a Construction Site

This week, the children in preschool had lots of fun exploring our construction-themed tuff tray. They dressed up in yellow hard hats and hi-vis vests and worked together to build their own construction site using sand, soil, oats and bricks. This supported Understanding the World as the children explored construction and different materials, while also encouraging Communication and Language as they talked about what they were creating and developed new vocabulary.
The children used their imaginations as they moved the materials around, created different building areas and explored how they could use the resources in their play. This encouraged Expressive Arts and Design, allowing the children to engage in imaginative and role play. They also demonstrated the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning by playing and exploring, making choices and creating and thinking critically as they developed their own ideas.

The children then enjoyed exploring the train tracks, building their own tracks and using the spades to dig and move the materials. This supported Physical Development by developing their hand strength, coordination and fine motor skills. Building the tracks also encouraged Mathematics as the children explored space, size, position and problem-solving.

It was lovely to see the children working together, sharing ideas and taking turns with the resources. This supported Personal, Social and Emotional Development by encouraging cooperation, confidence and positive relationships. The children showed active learning as they remained engaged, explored different possibilities and enjoyed developing their construction site together.
