This week, the grasshoppers explored and learned about the Indian festival of Diwali. They enjoyed listening to stories about the festival and its origins. However, the highlight of their learning experience was making a Diwali dish: Aloo Tikki! Each child had a role in preparing the dish, from peeling and cutting the potatoes to mashing them, mixing in the spices, shaping the potato cakes, and cooking them. The children had a great time learning to use various kitchen tools that challenged their fine motor skills, such as the potato peeler. They also learned important safety measures while cooking on the hot plate. The grasshoppers showed excellent listening skills as they explored the different aspects of this cooking adventure together. While cooking the spiced potato patties, they closely observed how the oil changed and started to bubble when it reached the right temperature. They also found it fascinating to watch the potato cakes change colour as they cooked. At the end of their busy week preparing Aloo Tikki, they delighted in enjoying their hard work as an afternoon snack, accompanied by some homemade raita for dipping. Well done Grasshoppers!
