This week the children took part in a challah bread-making session, where they explored the process of making bread from start to finish. The children were excited to get involved and followed a step-by-step recipe, carefully listening to instructions and working together throughout the activity.
The children helped to weigh and measure the ingredients, developing their understanding of quantities while practising their mathematical skills. They enjoyed mixing and combining the ingredients to create the dough, taking turns and supporting each other during the process.
Once the dough was ready, the children used a pizza cutter to carefully cut and divide the dough into equal sections, developing their understanding of sharing and dividing while strengthening their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. They then explored how to shape and plait the bread, carefully rolling and lifting the dough strands, weaving them over and under to create the traditional plaited shape. The children showed great concentration and control when handling the dough, understanding that it needed to be treated gently as it was delicate.
After the dough had risen for the second time, the children helped to egg wash the challah before carrying it into the kitchen ready to bake. They were excited to set a timer and wait patiently for the bread to finish cooking. When the challah was ready, the children were eager to see the finished result and enjoyed tasting the bread together at tea time.
This experience supported the children’s fine motor skills, communication, teamwork, confidence and ability to follow instructions, while also providing an opportunity to explore traditions, culture and the joy of creating something together.
Thank you to the parents who came and took part in the session!
