Hammers and Nails

Our toddlers have been fascinated by exploring hammers and nails, so this week we extended their interest by providing recycled boxes and pieces of card for them to investigate. The children eagerly set to work, carefully hammering nails to create holes, patterns, and their own unique designs.
As they explored, the children demonstrated fantastic critical thinking skills, experimenting with different ways to position the nails and discovering how much force was needed to make holes in different materials. They made predictions, solved problems, and adapted their techniques when something didn't work as expected. There were lots of excited conversations as they shared ideas, compared their creations, and celebrated their achievements.
This hands-on experience supported the development of fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, perseverance, and creativity, while giving the children the confidence to explore real tools safely under close adult supervision. Most importantly, the activity was filled with curiosity, excitement, and a real sense of pride as the children challenged themselves and discovered new possibilities through play.
