Fruit Kebabs
This week, the preschoolers had a wonderful hands-on experience making their own fruit kebabs. To begin, we took a trip to the local market, where the children were excited to choose the fruits they wanted to use. After lots of discussion and decision-making, they selected bananas, grapes, strawberries, and raspberries. This was a great opportunity for the children to explore different types of fruit, talk about colours, textures, and tastes, and practise their communication skills.
Once we returned to the nursery, the children washed their hands and got ready for the activity. With support and supervision, they carefully chopped up their chosen fruits using child-safe tools. This helped to develop their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and confidence in handling food. The children were very focused and took great pride in preparing their own ingredients.
After the fruit was prepared, the children began assembling their kebabs by threading the fruit onto skewers. They enjoyed creating their own patterns and combinations, showing creativity and independence. Some children talked about their favourite fruits and why they chose them, while others counted the pieces as they added them, linking the activity to early maths skills.
Finally, the best part eating the fruit kebabs! The children were very excited to taste their creations and were encouraged to try all the different fruits. It was lovely to see them enjoying healthy food and celebrating what they had made themselves.
