Splats of colour! 🎨
This week the toddlers engaged in a fun and practical activity that involved different textures and tools. The children were equipped with plastic hammers and swatters, bubble wrap, cotton pads and paint. Their objective was to hit down on top of the cotton pads that had drops of paint underneath them using either a hammer or a swatter, so when the pad got squashed down from the pressure, that would hopefully result to the paint squirting out from underneath.
What made this activity different was that the toddlers didn’t just use normal paper as the base, but instead bubble wrap which brought a bouncy, squishy and uneven texture that really intrigued the children because it’s not their everyday choice of material. As well as the cotton pads, which adds that soft and fluffy feel to their fingers. This too was encouraging their engagement of sensory play and given the opportunity to explore and use their fingers to feel and discover.
We combined the tools, so the children could have a choice of preference between them, as well as having different results of the splattered paint. The hammer having a solid and sturdy body compared to the swatter which is more flimsy, brought out different outcomes.
The children cooperated very well together and took turns in sharing the tools to take part, and portrayed good listening skills following the simple instructions given. A very well job done!
