This week in preschool they have been developing their understanding of shapes, learning to recognise and identify different shapes in the world around them. Shape recognition is an important part of early mathematical development, helping children to build visual awareness, understand similarities and differences, develop spatial awareness and lay the foundations for early maths skills.
To bring our learning to life, we enjoyed a creative Shape Scavenger Hunt! We began by looking at different shapes together before setting off around the room to see how many examples we could find. The children searched for objects that matched the shapes we had been shown, looking carefully at their surroundings and sharing their discoveries with one another.
Once we had collected our shape ideas, we worked together using paint and a large sheet of paper to create a beautiful shape collage! The children explored different ways of using shapes to make prints, dipping them into paint and pressing them onto the paper to see the patterns and pictures they could create.
The children were wonderfully engaged and excited throughout the activity. It was lovely to see them recognising shapes in their environment, sharing ideas and working together to create something special. They also had the opportunity to develop their creativity, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and confidence through hands-on exploration.
What a fantastic way to combine maths, creativity and teamwork! We are so proud of the beautiful collaborative artwork the children created together.
