This week in preschool, we focused on developing the children’s fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through an engaging loose parts activity. The children explored trays filled with a variety of materials, including cubes, corks, stickers and pins, and were encouraged to carefully place the objects along different lines and shapes, such as straight lines, zigzags and circles. As they picked up, positioned and moved the small objects, the children were developing their pincer grip, hand strength, coordination and control of small movements, all of which are important foundations for future mark-making and writing skills.
The activity also supported the children’s Physical Development within the EYFS, as they practised using their hands and fingers with increasing precision. It was lovely to see the children concentrating, persevering and showing determination as they carefully followed the different lines, demonstrating the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning through active learning and playing and exploring. They were also encouraged to make their own choices about which loose parts to use and how to position them, supporting their independence, problem-solving and creativity. The children thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on experience while developing important skills through play.
